Launching dailykanji.xyz! 🎉 🇯🇵

Hi everyone! TLDR; I created this Japanese Word of the Day Site, dailykanji.xyz, to help people set a small goal of learning one Japanese word per day :-)

I’m 21 and have tried to, and eventually given up on learning Japanese 4 times at this point. Each time, I end up setting an overly ambitious goal that I don’t have time for, and get burnt out quickly. My mindset has been that if I’m not on Anki learning > 10 words/day year-round that learning Japanese simply won’t be worth it or fun. Recently, though, I’ve found that with my knowledge of Hiragana, Katakana, and a few Kanji, it’s been fun to just try and read small things like snack packaging or recognize bits of anime dialogue without subtitles!

Thinking about this problem, I envisioned a tool to help me ease into learning Japanese by setting a goal of learning a single word per day, and sharing that tool with others! My priorities with this site are:

  1. Keep it simple: No clutter, short domain name, and a nice design
  2. No pretense that this tool will lead to fluency: I find that a lot of language learning resources like Duolingo try to convince users that by using their app for like 15 minutes a day, or even hours a day, will lead to fluency. This is bs. I want my tool to be open about the fact that there is absolutely no way that you will become fluent from using it on its own. This is meant to be a fun bookmark, not your entire curriculum.

If you’re interested in a tool like this, please check it out and let me know what you think!
